My compost is an epic failure... What can I do to save it?

I did everything the video said to do, and everybody said that I didn't need to add worms. They also said that it wouldn't stink and there would be no flies and stuff. Well.....I opened it today to put stuff in there and oh dear god. A huge wave of rotten air and fruit flies flew out of it. What can I do to stop this?
