Can I go to jail for this?

Yesterday this kid and I had a dispute at track practice. He's a shotput/discuss thrower and I'm a sprinter ( just so you know that there is a HUGE size difference... I'm 5'6 145, He's about 6'2 235). Well today he came after me, but some people held him back, so I went to my car and got a ratchet, and when he came after me, I popped him in the cheek with it, and everyone thinks I broke his cheek bone and he was taken to the hospital. Is this considered self defense? Or am I looking at some charges?
