What is a good cheap car to start off with?

I would recommend an 1984-2001 Jeep Cherokee. The 4.0 liter engine is reliable and they produced that same basic engine for over 30 years so parts are readily available. You can get a 2 or 4 door. There are lots of them out there in all different conditions. You should be able to find a decent one in your price range.
